What does it take to make a good Sherlock Holmes? Well, first you need a good dose of either Gemini or Mercury. Sherlock is all about brain power, problem-solving and that’s the business of Gemini and its ruler Mercury. Then you probably want a little Saturn. Saturn brings focus and concentration as well as a hard-edged, dispassionate attitude toward other people. Sherlock has only one friend (Dr. Watson) and he’s not very nice to him. Finally, you’ve got to have some Uranus or Aquarius because Mr. Holmes is nothing if not eccentric and he does things in his own, unique way or not at all.
We see all of these elements in the horoscope of the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle. (Click here to see his chart.) Doyle was born with the Sun in Gemini conjunct Uranus and trine his Moon in Aquarius. His Mercury forms a close square with Saturn. There’s a lot of other stuff going on in Doyle’s chart (he lived a complex and troubled life) but these are the aspects I would connect with his Sherlock Holmes stories.
We also see these elements in the horoscope of the actor who first defined Sherlock Holmes in motion pictures during the 1940s, Basil Rathbone. (Click here to see Rathbone’s chart.) Like Doyle, Rathbone was a Gemini by Sun sign and he had Mercury in Gemini trine his Mars in Aquarius. Saturn trines his Moon which is in Capricorn, the sign ruled by Saturn.
Actor Johnny Depp recently caused some consternation by hinting that he was thinking of retiring from acting. It’s hard for us regular working stiffs to comprehend anyone walking away from the kind of money Depp makes just for showing up in a movie. Also, people who are used to the kind of attention Depp gets in the world don’t generally step gracefully back in the shadows. Let’s take a look at his horoscope and see what’s up.
What’s going on in Depp’s horoscope right now is the opposition of transiting Neptune to his natal Mars. (Click here to see Depp’s horoscope.) This is an aspect he has been struggling with for a while. It was in effect back in June 2012 when Depp and Vanessa Paradis announced their break up. Neptune is in Depp’s 7th House of Marriage so this result was not surprising.
Neptune opposing Mars is an aspect for pursuing illusions or having your illusion revealed to you in rough and disturbing way. It is not an aspect of major change. Depp’s marriage, for example, had reportedly been on shaky ground for some time. This aspect only crumbled the illusion that it could last.
With this in mind, and the fact that Depp is a changeable Gemini by Sun sign, I wouldn’t give too much credence to the actor’s talk of retirement; except for one thing. In Nov. 2012, a few months after Depp and Paradis made their announcement; Saturn crossed the cusp of Depp’s 4th House, his I.C.
Generational astrology is the study of how the sign placements of the slower moving planets influence whole generations of people. It has been an ongoing interest of mine for some time. (Click here to see some of my articles on Generational Astrology.) Recently I saw an article the CNN website that dovetailed very nicely with some of my findings.
The article was written by Rachel Held Evans and cites finding from a survey conducted by the Public Religion Research Institute and the Brookings Institute. The survey labeled the youngest generation addressed as the “millennials” and included in this group people born between 1980 and 1995.(Click here to read Evans' article.)
Neptune entered Capricorn for the first time 1984 and stayed there until around 1998, so most of the people interviewed for this study came for the Neptune in Capricorn generation. (I keep telling these guys that if they just used a little astrology to mark off the generations they’d get much clear results, but you know how they are.) Also, about half the “millennials” in this study had Uranus also in Capricorn.
