The placement of the Sun and Moon in the New Moon chart for Feb. 1 (click here to see the article and the chart) argued against any significant developments during the last lunation period. At least with regard to the situation in Ukraine, that was mostly correct. In fact, it now sounds as if the crisis might be simmering down. On the other hand, the rest of the chart seemed to promise some occurrences that would, if nothing else, be interesting.
On the positive side, we saw many states removing the restrictions that were imposed because of the pandemic. This was certainly good news, though the fact there is yet another variant rumbling its way through Europe could interrupt our celebration. The truckers’ protest on the Canadian border also sparked much interest, particularly from those people who have grown tired of life under COVID restrictions.
There has also been some interesting news with regard to Donald Trump. The committee investigating the events of Jan. 6 obtained the presidential papers from that period and found that several documents were missing. It seems that former President Trump has already started editing the history of his administration. Also, there has been movement in the fraud case against Trump’s business, with his long-time accounting firm casting doubt on the veracity of their records from years past.
In this series I’ve described the kinds of transformations we might expect from the transformative conjunction of transiting Pluto to natal Pluto in the horoscope of the United States. So far we’ve covered a political transformation, an economic transformation and a transformation in our attitude toward climate change. However, there is another transformative event that is taking place in real time right before our eyes. That is the COVID-19 pandemic.
In March 2020 the arrival of COVID-19 changed everything. Large gatherings and public events were cancelled. Work places were emptied and people started working from home. Many schools also started on-line classes. Everyone (or nearly everyone) wore a mask when they went out in public and those who could avoided going out in public at all. People were scrubbing down their groceries, ordering everything from fast food to toilet paper on-line and, as much as possible, isolating themselves.
Since March 2020, we’ve seen surge after surge of the virus and, even though many of the restrictions of 2020 have been lifted, COVID-19 remains a big factor in how we conduct our lives. However, hope remains that, at some point in the near future, the pandemic will go away and we will be able to return to pre-2020 norms. We still look at the pandemic as a change, and not as a transformation.
The expectation is that the conjunction of transiting Pluto to its natal place in the horoscope of the United States will bring about some sort of great transformation within this country. So far, I have presented two possible ways in which such a transformation might occur. One is political and one is economic. However, there are other possibilities, some of which are already at work. One of these is the environment.
Evidence of climate change, such as the melting of the ice caps, the thawing of permafrost in Siberia and rising sea levels around the world, continues to grow. Some climate change deniers have actually changed their opinion in the last few years (though many of them still contend that the changes are not manmade). And yet, climate change continues to be like the weather, something everyone talks about but very few people seem willing to do anything about.
The reason for this is that climate change is incremental. The fact that the average temperature nudges just a little bit higher every summer might be alarming to climatologists but it is basically meaningless to the general public. It is certainly not a reason to stop burning fossil fuels or ban plastic bottles. How can cut through this apathy? One possibility would be a weather event of such shocking magnitude that it gets the attention of every American.
The stock market is a capricious beast, skittish as a fawn in some circumstances and in others seemingly oblivious to the most glaring signs of danger. It proceeds at its own irrational pace, following whims and sudden burst of sentiment up and down Dow Jones Average. During the past several years that progress has mostly been in an upward direction. Through two changes in administrations, the COVID pandemic and various economic troubles the stock market has continued to rise, setting records and generating huge profits for a select coterie of investors.
Throughout this period we’ve heard various experts predict an end to this phenomenal “bull” market. So far, they’ve all been wrong. However, they are right about one thing. No bull market goes on forever. They all stumble at some point. And, sometimes, those stumbles turn into disastrous crashes that drag down the entire world economy. This is what happened in 1929 and in 2008. There are astrologers who feel that it is bound to happen again this year during the U.S. Pluto Return.
