Why Sun Sign Astrology Doesn’t Always Work (Part Two)
We’ve all run into people who simply don’t act like their Sun sign. They may be a shy Leo, a taciturn Gemini or an anti-social Libra. Why is this? Well, there are several good astrological reasons.
In a previous article I used the example of talk-show host Craig Ferguson to illustrate one reason why this happens. Ferguson is a Sun sign Taurus but he has Gemini rising along with Mercury and Venus in Gemini (with Mercury directly on the Ascendant) and these factors outweigh the influence of his Sun, at least in his public persona.
But there are other reasons why people don’t act like their Sun signs. Let’s take the example of rock-and-roll icon Gene Simmons. During the 1970s Simmons gained fame as the bassist for the rock band, Kiss. The band was known for their elaborately painted faces, pyrotechnics and satanic imagary, and the tongue-wagging Simmons became the group’s most unabashed advocate of a hedonistic, rock and roll lifestyle.
Not long ago I heard Dr. Mehmet Oz say that every married couple, regardless of their age, should try to have sex at least two times a week. Dr. Oz is, of course, a well-known television personality and his medical advice has been helpful to millions. However, astrologically speaking, there are some problems with this particular perscription.
In astrology, we don’t expect the need for physical sex to be the same for everyone. Different planetary placements, in particular the signs occupied by Mars and Venus, are linked to different levels of sexual activity. When Mars and/or Venus are in Water or Earth signs in a person’s horoscope, for example, that person will have a greater need for sexual contact than a person who has Mars and/or Venus in Air or Fire signs. (Click on the highlighted areas to see which group applies to you)
Therefore, the couple in which the man had Mars in Cancer and the woman Venus in Taurus might find Dr. Oz’s prescription of sex twice a week totally inadequate, while the couple in which the man has Mars in Libra and the woman has Venus in Aries might find it daunting. For the first couple, sexual contact and the emotional bonds it represents would remain a necessary part of the expression of love regardless of their age. For the second, sex is only an enjoyable diversion. They may relish it when they’re young and healthy but it is the idea of partnership that really sustains the relationship.
In case you’re wondering, Dr. Oz was born on June 11, 1960 and he has Mars in Aries (a Fire sign) and Venus in Gemini (an Air sign.) Even though Aries is the most passionate of the Fire signs, this is not a particularly “sexy” combination. Dr. Oz’s wife, on the other hand, is a different story. Lisa Oz was born on July 20, 1963 and has Venus in Cancer (a Water sign) with Mars in Virgo (an Earth sign.) For this combination of Mars and Venus, Dr. Oz’s program might just be the minimum. So perhaps Dr. Oz's twice-a-week perscription might best be seen as a compromise.

Nov. 29, 1981 (Part Two)
What was going on in the horoscope of Robert Wagner on the night his wife died?
On the night of Nov. 28, 1981 and during the early morning of Nov. 29 the horoscope of Robert Wagner was a surly mess. Transiting Mars (Mars in the sky at that moment) was in a quincunx to his natal Venus and Sun. This is not a strong aspect but it would have put him in a combative mood.
More importantly, transiting Pluto was in the midst of a slow square to his natal Mercury. Wagner was going through a phase in which he could take no statement or idea at face value. Everything he heard or saw would be perceived as a possible threat and he would have been particularly argumentative and protective of his emotional “ground.”
The decision by police to reopen the investigation into Natalie Wood’s death has renewed interest in that tragic event. Let’s see what astrology has to add to the discussion.
On the night she died Natalie Wood’s natal horoscope was being hit by multiple aspects indicating both stress and reckless behavior.
First of all, transiting Saturn opposed to her natal Saturn. This aspect is part of a cycle Saturn makes in the horoscopes of everyone at some point. I write about this in detail in my book Saturn Cycles: Mapping the Changes in Your Life. With this important aspect going on, Wood would have been in the midst of a personal crisis. She would have felt that she had important choices to make, choices that would change the course of her life. This would have put her in a highly agitated and perhaps distracted state of mind.
