Saturn Square Neptune and Paris

I have to admit that I was taken by surprise by the horrible events that took place last night in Paris. Nothing going on in the sky that night seemed to foretell such carnage. I felt that the one big transiting aspect that was coming up would not make itself felt until later in the month. Obviously, I was being too optimistic.

The big aspect I’m talking about is a square between Saturn and Neptune. It will be within a degree of application as of Nov. 17 and exact on Nov. 27. The aspect will come around again in June 2016 and remain close for the entire summer, before it makes its last exact contact in Sept. 2016.

Another reason I was taken by surprise is that, after the explosive power of the long-running square between Uranus and Pluto that dominated the headlines for three years, Saturn square Neptune seemed to have less potential for violence. Since Saturn represent authority and Neptune vagueness and confusion, I expected to see a further deterioration of confidence in government, possible brought about by scandals or miscommunication.

But there’s another side to this aspect that the events in Paris has suddenly brought to light. In a more positive vein, Neptune represents compassion, not just for people we know, but for humanity in general. Neptune is that fragile light in the human soul that allows us to love people completely different from ourselves. Saturn, on the other hand, is about restriction, and a practical (sometimes hard-hearted) concern for self-preservation.

What I see happening with Saturn square Neptune now is a further dimming of that tiny Neptunian light. Just as the 9/11 attacks spread fear and suspicion, and activated people in authority to come down hard on the side of prevention (leading to full body scans in airports, wiretaps, torture and, finally, war), this event will bring about drastic changes in policy. To most people these changes will seem necessary. What we do under the influence of Saturn always seems necessary. The regrets come later.

When the planes hit the twin towers in 2001, Saturn was opposed to Pluto. The aspect was separating. Even though astrologers had been predicting that George W. Bush would be a “war” president, there was nothing that made that day particularly significant, astrologically. However, by the time that opposition between Saturn and Pluto was completed, early in 2002, the mentality of people in the United States and around the world had changed. We were primed for war, and that’s what we got.

That war is still going on. Saturn square to Neptune is probably not going to make it any more or less violent or destructive. What it is going to do is further polarize public opinion, widen the gap between Moslems and non-Moslems and make true compassion an even rarer commodity that it already is.
