The Venus Signs: Taurus and LibraVenusSymbol

In my last article I compared the two signs ruled by Mercury, Gemini and Virgo. Now it's time to look at the two signs ruled by Venus, Taurus and Libra.

As different as they are, Gemini and Virgo at least share the same Quality or Modality. They are both Mutable signs, sign noted for the adaptability. Taurus and Libra, on the other hand, are different both in terms of their Quality and their Element. Taurus is a Fixed Earth Sign, while Libra is a Cardinal Air sign. In this sense, they have little in common.

And yet, we can see the influence of Venus strongly expressed in both these signs. First there is the appreciation of beauty. For Taurus, it is the beauty of the physical world. It is the delight of the senses, and the majesty of naturel. For Libra, beauty is more conceptual. It is an ideal of perfect balance, harmony and agreement. They may see it expressed in a work of art or a sunset or even in a personal relationship.

Then there is the need for ease and pleasure, and the avoidance of conflict and pain. For Taurus people this need is exhibited in material terms. They love comfort. They gravitate toward luxury. They pursue sensual pleasure. Libras, on the other hand, are much less overt in their search for ease and pleasure. It is the comfort of companionship that they lust for, and sense of ease that comes from knowing that everyone is playing nice and being fair with one another.

Obviously, Libra’s ideal of peace and fairness is bound to fall apart in the face of human fraity, just as Taurus’ search for pleasure is eventually going to have to surrender to the necessity of pain and decline. It is the nature of Venus to provide us with a goal so seductive that none can resist it, and so elusive that none can sustain it.

And then there is love, Venus’ most desirable and elusive attribute. For Taurus love is a physical matter, but that doesn’t mean it stops with the body. Love is a matter of consistency, of practical support, of having the means, the foresight and the strength of character to protect your beloved from adversity, danger and harm. Sure, beauty and sensuality are considerations, but true love is a carefully crafted principle for living, and no sign holds on to these principles more firmly than Taurus.

Libra people also put great stock in their conception of love. That conception is always going to be more intellectual and less attainable than Taurus’. But that’s okay. Libras understand that true love is elusive and ultimately unreachable, and yet there is not greater privilege afforded a human being than being given the chance to pursue that unreachable goal.

Of course, both sign show us some of the less desirable qualities of Venus. Taurus folks can be lazy and self-indulgent. Libras often refuse to acknowledge ugly realities that conflict with their precious ideals. It’s almost impossible to get a Taurus to step outside his or her “comfort zone.” Libras often get so caught up is making everything and everyone around them “perfect” that they forget how to be charming and polite. But, on the whole, Venus makes both these signs a little more likable. At their best, Taurus and Libra people are “beautiful” in the best sense of the word.

Again we invite all you Taurus and Libra Sun signs to tell us what you think. Don’t be shy.
