Astrology Meets March Madness: Gregg Marshall

I’m a big college basketball fan, so I thought it might be fun to take a look at the horoscopes of some of the coaches who are likely to figure prominently in this year’s NCAA men's basketball tournament. This time we’re going to look at the coach of the Wichita State Shockers, Gregg Marshall.

We don’t have a time of birth for Marshall and his Moon changes signs on his birthday (from Aries to Taurus), but there’s still a lot to talk about in this partial horoscope. (Click here to see a horoscope for Gregg Marshall done for noon.)

The most dynamic aspect in this chart is the opposition between Coach Marshall’s Sun and Pluto. The meaning of this aspect is more or less summed up in one of Shocker’s team mottos: “Play angry.” Pluto is the seat of our inner rage. It is the depository of all the dark memories and bad feelings that we collect through a lifetime. The person who can tap into this reservoir of rage has access to incredible power and irresistible intensity.

Marshall is certainly one of those people. He has established a history of making champions out of underdogs. He did it first as the head coach of the Winthrop Eagles, and now he is doing it with the Wichita State Shockers. Last year he led the unheralded Shockers (a lowly 9 seed in the tournament) to a berth in the Final Four, where they were finally beaten by the Louisville Cardinals, the team that won it all.

Of course, this year Wichita State could hardly be called an underdog. They come into the tournament with an unbelievable record of 34 wins and no losses. For a college basketball team to go through a whole season without losing a game is almost unheard of.  And they are a number one seed, picked by the experts to be the top dog in their region.

Can Coach Marshall and his team “play angry” as a favorite? People with Pluto opposite the Sun are always at their best when their back is against the wall, when they are defying expectations. It remains to be seen if Marshall can summons that same intensity and winning rage when everyone expects him to win.

Last November, when this team was just beginning their season, Saturn was moving through a 90 degree square aspect to Coach Marshall’s natal Saturn. I talk a lot about Saturn cycles on these pages (and I say more in my book, Saturn Cycles: Mapping the Changes in Your Life) because they represent the challenges that bring out the best and worst in us.

Marshall has done well with his Saturn passages in the past. In 2006, when the coach was putting together the Winthrop team whose surprising performance in the 2007 NCAA tournament led to Marshall being offered the job at Wichita State, Saturn was opposed to its natal place.

That Saturn transit certainly brought out the best in Coach Marshall. The recent square seems to have done the same thing. No matter how the Shockers fare in the tournament, Marshall’s stock as a coach could not go much higher.

I’m still looking for your comments and suggestions about which coaches I should be looking at. Don’t let me have all the fun.
