The Astrology of the 2014 Oscar Race: Bruce Dern

Like Judy Dench among the nominees for Best Actress, Bruce Dern’s acting career was well underway long before the other actors in this category were even born. When he received his first Oscar nomination in 1978, (for Best Supporting Actor in Coming Home) Matthew McConaughey was ten years old and Leonardo DiCaprio was three.

This year Dern has been nominated for his role in Nebraska.

Also like Judi Dench, Bruce Dern was born with the Sun square Neptune. (Click here to see Dern’s horoscope.) Dern has avoided the glitz and glamour that is often associated with his profession and built his career on playing characters, on pretending to be someone he is not. This is a very Neptunian process, but since the aspect is a square, it is also very much like work.

Dern was born with the Sun in Gemini and the Moon in Sagittarius. This is a combination of opposites. The Sun in Gemini will always busy itself with the problem at hand, but the Moon in Sagittarius needs hope, it needs to believe that something wonderful is just around the corner. Without that optimism, that kernel of hopefulness, this combination of the Sun and Moon can become defensive, bitter and mean.

Many of the characters Dern has played over the years have been “bitter and mean.” In fact, you could say that playing quirky, maladjusted, mean people has become his specialty. So, maybe Dern knows something about what happens when the Moon in Sagittarius loses confidence in the future.

However this tendency may have been used in his professional life, we can be certain that, on a personal level, Dern has managed to keep that kernel or hope alive. Otherwise he wouldn’t be where he is right now: nominated for an academy award for Best Actor for the first time at the age of 77.

With this in mind, I’m sorry that I don’t see more positive things happening with Dern’s horoscope on Oscar night. The only relevant aspect on that night for Dern will be a square by the transiting Sun to his natal Sun, and this is an aspect of thwarted ambitions.

Dern’s secondary progressed horoscope is better. His secondary progressed Moon will be closing on a trine to his Sun. However, his secondary progressed Jupiter is moving away from an opposition to his natal Sun (which is good) and moving toward an opposition to his natal Mars (which is not so good.) Also, his secondary progressed Venus is square to his natal Sun, a positive planet, but a stressful aspect.

Generally speaking, even the most positive aspects in the secondary progressed chart need the support of transiting aspects to manifest. This is why I don’t expect Dern to win the big prize this year. However, most of the secondary progressed aspects I’ve mentioned will be around for another couple of years, so that hope that the Moon in Sagittarius needs so badly, can still keep its shine.

Let us know who you favor among the Oscar nominees. Your input is always welcome.
