The Moon in Cancer and Paris Jackson

The recent suicide attempt by Paris Jackson, the daughter of Michael Jackson, shocked many people. As she was portrayed in the press, this pretty teen seemed remarkable happy and well-adjusted, particularly when we consider the tragic passing of her father and the unconventional nature of her family life. There was obviously something going on with this youngster that was not apparent to her caretakers or the media. That’s where astrology comes in. (Click here to see the horoscope of Paris Jackson.)

It is interesting that Paris Jackson’s suicide attempt came just a few days after the arrest of Amanda Bynes (Click here to see my article on Bynes.) Both Jackson and Bynes were born on April 3 and, therefore have the Sun in their horoscope at around 13 degrees of Aries. Uranus is at 12 degrees of Aries and Pluto is at 11 degrees of Capricorn, square Uranus. This puts a lot pressure on the Sun and thus on the ego and core identity of people born on April 3.

But that’s just part of the story for Paris Jackson. In her horoscope the Moon is at 10 degrees of Cancer, square her natal Sun and exactly in the crosshairs of Uranus and Pluto. Uranus has just passed a square with her Moon and Pluto is opposed, forming a T-square.

The Moon is our protector. It guards our inner selves. It uses intuition to warn us about situations or people who might be harmful to us and by means of “feelings” it guides us to circumstances that are comfortable and secure. In acting as our protector them Moon can be irrational, unpredictable and, sometimes, extreme. Like a distraught mother, the Moon sees no distinction between reaction and overreaction.

Paris Jackson’s Moon is in Cancer, where it is particular strong. In Cancer, the Moon’s sensitivity to possible hurts and threats to the ego is even more acute than is typical. For this reason, people with the Moon in Cancer are often quite intuitive. They let the Moon guide them away from potentially painful situations.

Of course, there are some situations in which the pain cannot be avoided, such as the death of parent. In these cases the sensitivity and depth of feeling we get with the Moon in Cancer becomes a detriment. The pain lingers. It is internalized. It becomes a silent guest that lives under the surface of our daily lives and cannot be openly expressed.

The aspects to Paris Jackson’s Moon by Uranus and Pluto brought to the surface all the pain and grief that this girl had felt since the death of her father, agony that her Cancer Moon struggled to keep at bay for so long. We can hope that Jackson's suicide attempt will represent a catharsis for her and that she will finally be able to come to terms with her loss. The other side of the Moon’s function is helping us recover from emotional trauma and, here, a strong Cancer Moon is a good thing to have.
