Varys imageGame of Signs: An Astrological look at Game of Thrones

Part Twelve

I’m a big fan of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire and the television (HBO) adaptation of those novels, Game of Thrones. I thought it might be fun to match some of the characters from this series with astrological signs. If you are not familiar with the books or the television series then proving my matches right or wrong might be an excellent reason to start watching and/or reading.

We have two signs left and one of them is Aquarius. Who would be the Aquarius in this varied cast of characters? My vote goes to the man known as the Spider, Varys the Eunuch.

Westeros is a land in which the roles of males and females are distinct and unchangeable, so just the fact that Varys is a eunuch doubly sets him apart from his peers. Most Aquarians are extraordinary in some fashion in some way or another. They shamelessly stand apart from the herd. The gift of people born under this sign is that they can be misfits and still remain a vital part of the society in which they live.

Varys sits on the King’s council. He is the spy master, the man who gathers whispers from sources foreign and domestic and feeds this information to the King. By this means Varys has gained a great deal of power but very little respect. Even those men who have thrived because of the information Varys has provided dismiss him as an effeminate gossip; a creature without lands or title who could never be their equal.

Aquarius people are independent. They pursue their objectives with single-minded resolve and pay little or no heed to how their actions might be perceived by other people. They might be loved or they might be hated. It really makes no difference to a true Aquarian.

At one point in the story Ned Stark asks Varys who it is that he serves. Varys’ answer is “the realm.” In general, Aquarians are more attuned to abstractions than they are to people and their deepest loyalties will always lie in the world of ideas, big ideas. For Varys the interests of any one family or any one individual in teh game of thrones are meaningless. He is thinking is much broader terms.

In the television series we have only seen hints of what the Master of Whispers has in mind. Mostly we see him struggling to maintain his position is a hostile and ever changing political landscape. But, sooner or later, Varys will have to reveal himself as the revolutionary that, deep down, ever Aquarius aspires to be.
