Game of Signs: An Astrological look at Game of ThronesBronn Image

Part Eleven

I’m a big fan of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire and the television (HBO) adaptation of those novels, Game of Thrones. I thought it might be fun to match some of the characters from this series with astrological signs. If you are not familiar with the books or the television series then proving my matches right or wrong might be an excellent reason to start watching and/or reading.

As you might have guessed, I am trying to match each of the twelve signs of the zodiac with one of the characters from this series. For the most part this has been easy but I was having trouble finding a Virgo. Then I thought of a relatively minor character who seems to dominate every scene that he is in, Tyrion’s sell-sword buddy, Bronn.

Bronn enters the story as an itinerant mercenary (currently out of a job) who volunteers to help Catelynn Stark take Tyrion as a prisoner to her sister’s castle. Along the way he and Tyrion become friendly. When Tyrion demands a trial by combat and asks for someone to be his champion, to the surprise of the assembled knights and ladies, Bronn steps forward.

We never know if Bronn made the decision to help Tyrion because he liked the little man or because he saw a chance to gain a wealthy benefactor. Virgo’s are practical people and they can be opportunistic, but Virgo’s also have a deep need to serve and help the needy and infirm. Also, Virgo is a Mutable sign, capable of acting out a multiple motivations.

In order to defend Tyrion, Bronn has to fight a highly regarded knight from the House of Arryn. It hardly seems an equal match. But the sell-sword enters the arena with a plan. He lets the knight, burdened with plate armor and carrying a weighty shield, be the aggressor for a while and then, when Catelynn’s champion becomes fatigued, Bronn attacks.

Virgos are not known for their competitive zeal but when do decide to fight they have two things going for them. They have a realistic awareness of their own strengths and weaknesses and they are extraordinarily astute and analyzing the strengths and weakness of their opponents.

Bronn is a cynical man who scoffs at the pretenses of knighthood. He says he is only motivated by money and yet he remains loyal to his favorite Lannister even when Tyrion is at his lowest point. Meanwhile, Bronn accepts his own rise and fall at the court of King’s Landing with fatalistic distain.

Fixed sign people are loyal because they don’t like change. For Virgo, however, loyalty comes out a need to be needed and because, at their best, Virgos are able to see what is essential in a person and ignore the trappings of success and failure. Yes, sometimes Virgos do seem cynical, sardonic and even fatalistic to people who lack their realism and unadorned practicality, but a Virgo friend is a friend to keep through the best and the worst of times.
