Game of Signs: An Astrological look at Game of Thrones
Part Nine
I’m a big fan of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire and the television (HBO) adaptation of those novels, Game of Thrones. I thought it might be fun to match some of the characters from this series with astrological signs. If you are not familiar with the books or the television series then proving my matches right or wrong might be an excellent reason to start watching and/or reading.
Last time we put Queen Cersei under Scorpio. Now let’s consider her twin brother, Jamie Lannister.
Early on in the story Jamie Lannister commits a dastardly deed. He throws a helpless boy, Bran Stark, off the top of a tower. He does this with a laugh, saying “the things I do for love.” In fact, he was doing it for love. Bran had discovered Jamie and his sister having sex and one word from the child about what he had seen would have put an end not only to their incestuous relationship, but probably to their lives as well.
Scorpio people can do the dirty deeds that have to be done. It’s not that they lack scruples. They are just capable of seeing beyond common morality to a greater good. To Jamie, his relationship with Cersei was the greater good. We might not agree but Scorpio is a Water sign and what they feel is always going to outweigh what other people thinks.
Jamie is a different Scorpio than his sister. He doesn’t plot or cling to his grudges. His skill with a sword has given him a means of expressing his anger more directly. Jamie’s Scorpio nature is expressed in his sardonic asides and world-weary pessimism. He’s a Scorpio whose mistrust extends to the entire world and he expects nothing but the worst from anyone, including himself.
Jamie is called the Kingslayer. He earned this title by killing King Aerys Targaryen, a man he was sworn to protect. King Aerys II was crazy and he had already killed several nobles in a horrendous manner. Jamie removed this awful man and the thanks he received was the contempt of the Starks and the Baratheon’s who had come to the capitol with an army to do pretty much the same thing. No wonder Jamie laughs at men who claim high ideals like honor and chivalry.
The amazing thing about Scorpios is way in which they can transform themselves, how they can rise out the depths of despair and adversity and soar to a higher level of consciousness. Jamie was certainly transformed when his sword hand was cut off. Now Jamie will have to find a new way to deal with world and in the process he will discover, within himself, amazing new wisdom and strength. He will no longer be the dastardly man who dropped Bran from a rooftop. Will this transformation allow Jamie to escape his past? That remains to be seen.
