A Game of Signs: An Astrological look at Game of Thrones
Part Five
I’m a big fan of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire and the television (HBO) adaptation of those novels, Game of Thrones. I thought it might be fun to match some of the characters from this series with astrological signs. If you are not familiar with the books or the television series then proving my matches right or wrong might be an excellent reason to start watching and/or reading.
Today let’s consider the Starks' eldest daughter, Sansa.
Sansa is a seemingly naïve young woman who believes in romance and chivalry. Her view of the world has been shaped by the songs sung to her by minstrels, songs of brave knights,beautiful maidens and love everlasting. And no matter how brutal and vicious the reality into which she is thrown becomes, Sansa never loses touch with the possibility of this beautiful ideal. That’s why I think Sansa has to be a Libra.
So am I saying that Libra’s are foolish dreamers? Hardly. It is the idealism of Libra people that makes them strong and resilient. In circumstances in which more realistic folks might descend into depression or rage, Libras maintain their faith that the bad will eventually be balanced out with good. In the meantime they do what they can to nudge the scales back to a point of balance.
In Sansa’s case, those scales are badly out of balance. She is betrothed to Joffrey Baratheon, the heir to the throne of the Seven Kingdoms, but he turns out to be a malicious monster. Then she has to watch as her father is beheaded as a traitor. When her brother revolts against the King, she suffers repeated humiliations at Joffrey’s hand. Even when her engagement is ended, Sansa finds no salvation. She becomes a hostage in an ongoing war between the House of Lannisters and the Starks.
If Sansa seems to be a passive victim, it has more to do with the world in which she lives than her Libra personality. Unmarried women have little access to power in Westeros. But Sansa is not helpless. She negotiates secretly to arrange her escape and she unwittingly begins a process that will end in the downfall of her ex-fiancée.
Libra is a Cardinal sign and therefore Libra people are activists. However, their activism is never quite as open or aggressive as that of other Cardinal signs. Libra’s prefer to work through other people. They use alliances and personal connections to make changes and they are typically careful not to tread on too many toes along the way.
As Sansa’s story goes on, marriage and partnership will continue to play an important part and her fate will rest largely on the designs of her partner. Thus far in the books, as in the television show, Sansa has not found he ideal world of knights and ladies fair, but that doesn’t mean she won’t.
