A Game of Signs: An Astrological look at Game of Thrones.

Part Four

I’m a big fan of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire and the television (HBO) adaptation of those novels,  Game of Thrones. I thought it might be fun to match some of the characters from this series with astrological signs. If you are not familiar with the books or the television series then proving my matches right or wrong might be an excellent reason to start watching and/or reading.

This time let’s look at Ned Stark’s illegitimate son, Jon Snow.

I see Jon Snow as a Capricorn. He begins life with a handicap. He is a bastard. Even though Lord Stark takes him into his home and raises him with his legitimate children, Jon knows that he is an outsider. He can expect nothing to come to him by right of birth. He is going to have to earn whatever he gets from life.

Capricorn people don’t always start life with a disadvantaged but they typically act as if they have. Capricorns assume that they will have to work a little harder, deal with a little more adversity and take on more responsibilities than everyone else. Of course, Capricorn folks also assume that, in the end, they will be a little more successful than everyone else.

So Jon Snow does not question that he is destined to serve on The Wall, the enormous blockade of ice the separates civilized Westeros from the dark and wild things that live in the frozen north. He goes willingly and does his duty. Even when he is ordered to pretend to betray the brotherhood of The Wall and join the army of “Wildings” that is trying to breach it and invade the South, Jon Snow reluctantly does as he is told..

Duty is an important issue for Capricorn people. They know their place in the structure of authority and they act accordingly. When that structure shifts, however, they are quick to take advantage and improve their position.

Because Capricorns are so focused on their duty they often miss out on the less structured nuances of human behavior and communication. When Jon's Wilding girlfriend tells him “You know nothing, Jon Snow,” she is addressing just this fact. Duty can sometimes blind Capricorn people to empathy, understanding and love.

People who have read the books know that Jon Snow will advance within The Wall’s military organization, just as we would expect of a Capricorn. Moreover, he will prove himself to be a resourceful and innovative leader. But his inability to foresee the human limitations of other people will, eventually, threaten everything that he has accomplished. Again, nothing comes easily to Capricorns and their successes are frequently accompanied by sacrifice.
