The Game of Signs: An Astrological look at Game of Thrones
Part Two
I’m a big fan of George R.R. Martin’s fantasy series A Song of Ice and Fire and the television (HBO) adaptation of those novels, Game of Thrones. I thought it might be fun to match some of the characters from this series with astrological signs. If you are not familiar with the books or the television series then proving my matches right or wrong might be an excellent reason to start watching and/or reading.
Last time we looked at the ill-fated patriarch of the Stark family, Ned Stark. This time let’s consider his wife, Catelyn Stark.
I see Catelyn as a Cancer. She is, like her husband, devoted to her family but her devotion is much more emotional and obsessive in its nature. When her younger son, Bran, in seriously injured, Lady Stark maintains a sleepless vigil at his bedside. She refuses to leave her post even when part of her castle catches fire. That motherly instinct allowed her to save her son from an assassin’s knife.
Cancer is a Cardinal sign and, for all their sensitivity, Cancer’s are proactive people who are not afraid to bring the fight to their enemy. So, when Catelyn finds herself in a position to capture Tyrion Lannister, the man she thinks planned the attempted assassination, she takes him prisoner. That rash act sets off a war between the Starks and the Lannisters that will rip the Seven Kingdoms apart.
But Catelyn isn’t through acting of her feelings. Later, in the midst of war, Lady Stark defies her eldest son, Robb, (who is now Lord of Winterfell) and frees their most prized captive, Jamie Lannister, in the faint hope that she can exchange him for her two daughters who are in the hands of the Lannisters. For this act of motherly devotion Catelyn is imprisoned by her own son.
Cancer people often act out of a brand of logic that is totally their own. They see the world in terms of emotional connections, subjective needs and slow-burning grudges. Sometimes this way of thinking allows the Cancer person to make intuitive leaps that totally baffle those of us who rely purely on rational means, but sometimes they just leap into a whole lot of trouble.
I could say more about Lady Stark but then I would be revealing turns in the plot that have yet to come up in the television series. Let’s just say that Catelyn continues to display for her “emotional” intelligence and that it eventually leads her into some very strange places.
