Astrology and the Oscar Race: Part One

Though I don’t claim to be an expert when it comes to movies and generally only take a passing interest in who wins Academy Awards, I thought it might be interesting to look at the horoscopes of this year’s Oscar contenders for best actor and best actress and see if anyone has an astrological edge.

We’ll start with Bradley Cooper, nominated for his role in Silver Linings Playbook.

We don’t have a complete horoscope for Bradley Cooper but just by looking at a chart done for noon on his birthday (click here to see chart) we can see that his is a distinctly two sided personality. First we have his Sun in a close sextile with Jupiter, a free-and-easy aspect that is supported by his Mars in Sagittarius (the sign Jupiter rules.) This provides for an expansive, optimistic nature; a person who is easy to like and knows how to have fun.

When we get down to the meat of the horoscope, however, we see a very different picture. His Sun is in Capricorn along with his Mercury and Venus. Moreover, the Sun is in a tight opposition aspect with Saturn, the planet that rules Capricorn. This combination presents us with a serious personality, someone who possesses unlimited self-discipline and substantial ambitions.

People with the Sun opposed to Saturn are typically not the happiest of people because, no matter how much they accomplish, they can never satisfy their inner “father”.  But once they get past the need to be constantly kicking their own ass, these folks can get lot of stuff done and achieve great success.

It would appear as if Cooper has been going through a lot of self “ass-kicking” during the past couple of years. His secondary progressed Mars has been crossing his natal Sun and opposed to his natal Saturn. The fact that he has enjoyed increasing success during this period is an indication that there are things going on in his chart that we are not seeing in this partial horoscope. Still, with this progression still in force, I don’t like Cooper’s chances of winning the Oscar. Mars gives us hard work and tough battles. It rarely hands us trophy when it’s over.
