Uranus Square Pluto: It Beginsuranussqpluto

This week Uranus moved to within a degree of a 90 degree aspect to Pluto. This is the big confrontation of planets that astrologers have been talking about, dreading and (in some cases) looking forward to for a long time.

Uranus represents sudden, revolutionary change. Pluto represents slow but inevitable transformation. Uranus is the people rising up in the name of a cause or belief. Pluto is the powers-that-be subtly consolidating their position and increasing their control. If this were a sporting match, it would be a classic. Unfortunately, it is not. In this contest the winner and losers will be you and I.

The first major skirmish is this war of planets occurred in the summer of 2011 with the debt ceilng crisis in Washington. More recent manifestations have been the election of a socialist president in France and the rejection of austerity programs in Greece and elsewhere in Europe. The Tea Party is an expression of the tension caused by this aspect. So was the Occupy movement. President Obama’s decision to support gay marriage is a further indication of how this aspect is forcing us all to choose a side.

Cataclysmic events don’t always come when aspects are exact. For example, the Saturn to Pluto opposition that is associated with the 9/11 attacks was separated by two degrees on the day of the actual strike. It had been exact a month before, when the final plans for the attack were being made, and it became exact again in Nov. 2011 when the Taliban fled Kabul and the U.S. occupation of that country began.

However, given that the U.S. is in the middle of a hot and divisive presidential election and facing another debt ceiling confrontation the summer, given the grave uncertainty of Europe’s financial situation and the possible default by Greece and other countries, given the scandals in China, the nuclear face-off between Iran and Israel and all the other potential conflagrations we face around the globe, I don’t think we’re going to have to wait long to see how this exact aspect manifests.

The bottom line is that we are all doomed to live in interesting times. And they’re going to remain interesting for a while. After this aspect is complete on June 24, there will be seven more exact squares between Uranus and Pluto in the months that follow, the last one taking place in March, 2015.
