Betsy DeVos Under Pressure

The nomination of Betsy DeVos as Secretary of Education happened just after Saturn had passed over its natal place in her horoscope. (Click on Betsy DeVos to see a chart done for noon on her date of birth.) As I said in my article on Ghislaine Maxwell, these Saturn Cycle aspects typically bring us tests and DeVos’ tenure at the Dept. of Education has certainly been a test, mostly of her ability to withstand criticism.

The criticism of DeVos has so far centered on her lack of experience as an educator and her long advocacy of private schools. As one might expect from a Sun sign Capricorn, she has weathered this criticism rather well. Capricorns don’t need to be popular. Once they are given a job to do, they will get it done, no matter what other people say or do. It’s no accident that DeVos is one of the few people amount President Trump’s original cabinet who is still in her seat.

Recently, however, the scrutiny of Secretary DeVos has intensified. As the summer winds down, people are looking ahead toward the beginning of the school year and wondering how we can open classrooms in the midst of COVID-19. With infection rates spiking in many parts of the country, parents are worried about the safety of their kids, while school administrators struggle to find ways to balance education and heath concerns. On the frontlines of all this are the teachers, who will be charged with not only teaching their classes but also enforcing things like social distancing and the wearing of masks.

Secretary DeVos’ answer to this has been to echo the demands of her boss, President Trump, and call for all public schools to reopen. She’s even joined him in threatening to withhold federal funds from schools that don’t. Some people feel that this insistence on opening all the schools has more to do with economics and getting parents back to work than education. However, regardless of Devos’ motivation, her stance has put the Secretary under a lot of pressure, and this pressure is reflect in her horoscope.

Right now, DeVos’ chart is dominated by three hard aspect, all of them nearly exact. Transiting Neptune is square her natal Saturn, transiting Uranus is square her natal Uranus and transiting Saturn is square her natal Jupiter. Without a complete horoscope, I really can’t offer any interpretation of these aspects. That would require knowing the placement of those planets in her chart. However, there can be no denying that Betsy DeVos is currently feeling a great deal of pressure in different areas of her life. That pressure might not be apparent. (Capricorns are almost a good as Scorpios at hiding their feelings.) But these aspects tell us that she is well-aware of what is at stake and that she can't be altogether comfortable with decisions she is making.

Obviously, there is no easy answer to the question of what to do about schools. We are really caught between two harsh realities. On the one hand, kids need to be in school. On the other, kids in school will increase the spread of the virus. There’s no getting around either of these facts. This is what having Saturn, Jupiter and Pluto in Capricorn has dealt us. DeVos is just one of many people dealing this devil’s bargain. Hopefully, some of them have better transits right now than she does.
