Following the Moon: June 5, 2020

I have to begin with an apology. I completely misread the square by Mars to the Sun and Moon in my analysis of the May 22 New Moon chart. (Click here to see the article and the chart.) I looked at it in the context of the Covid 19 pandemic and did not fully consider its potential for violence. The placement of the Sun and Moon in the Ninth House of that chart referred to our ideals, not our health, and when those ideals were trashed by the actions of police officers in Minneapolis (and in Louisville and other places across the country), many of us reacted with the outrage of Aries the Warrior.

This is not to say that before the murder of George Floyd, we, as a nation, were living in exact accordance with our ideals. The Ninth House represents the principles toward which we aspire. I think a lot of people had gotten the notion that, since Ferguson, our country had taken some steps toward those Ninth House aspirations. The brutality exhibited by the police officers who arrested Floyd showed us otherwise. That was Mars busting through our ideals. It was also Saturn, which was trine the Sun and Moon in that lunations chart, teaching us a lesson about complacency.

As far as the Coronavirus is concerned, my prediction about Neptune continuing to muddy the waters was pretty much on target. As we continue to reopen businesses, the infection rate has gone up, but we are still waiting to see if the big surge that some experts were expecting will happen. I also predicted that there would be a resolution to some of the issues hanging in the balance before the New Moon. I think we saw this in the apparent collapse of Tara Reade’s complaint against Joe Biden early in this cycle.

The Full Moon chart for June 5 (click on Full Moon to see the chart) seems to promise continued unrest. In this chart Mars forms a T-square with the Moon and Sun and the aspect is very nearly exact. What’s more, the Sun is once again in the Ninth House (when the chart is done for Washington D.C.) indicating that our ideals are going to be the major concern. We might hope that the presence of Venus near the Sun and also square Mars will act as a deterrent to violence, but Venus is the ruler of the Ascendant of this chart. This might indicate that the confrontations will be more personal and involve our identity as a nation.

Since the President’s reaction to the protests has been to threaten bringing in the military and “dominating” the demonstrators, peaceful or otherwise, the promise of violence in this Full Moon chart could turn out to be very real. However, this is one case in which we might be helped by Neptune, which is conjunct Mars and makes a wide square to the Sun and Moon. The fact that Mars is in Neptune’s sign, Pisces, gives that conjunction extra weight.

I think that the fact that Mars is in Pisces is one reason why the demonstrations that have taken place in so many of our cities have, at times, veered toward looting and violence. Pisces doesn’t like boundaries and that makes directing and focusing our anger and outrage difficult. The conjunction of Mars with Neptune in this Full Moon chart should do very much the same to Trump’s plans to use the military. Legal issues and other constraint are likely to reduce his tough talk to mere bluster.

Of course, Mars is once again placed in the Sixth House of health and, this time, it is joined by Neptune. We are still a long way from being out of the woods with Covid 19. This aspect system could also be read as indicating a second surge in the infection rates. Neptune will probably continue to make a clear assessment of the situation difficult, but Mars represents speed, and we already seen the speed with which this illness can spread.
