“The Squad”: Rashida Tlaib and Ayana Pressley
Lately the news has been full of references to “The Squad”, four progressive congresswomen who have set themselves against the status quo and Nancy Pelosi, and who have more recently become a favorite punching bag for Donald Trump and the object of xenophobic chants at his rallies.
I have already written about two of these women, Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (click on the names to see the articles) so I decided it was only fair that I look at the charts of the other two: Rashida Tlaib and Ayana Pressley. Of course, we don’t have a time of birth for these women so I've done partial horoscopes done for noon on their date of birth. (Click on Rashida Tlaib and Ayana Pressley to see the charts.)
The first thing I notice was that these two women came from an older generation than Omar and A.O.C. Tlaib and Pressley are from the generation with Neptune in Sagittarius and Pluto in Libra. This is an idealistic generation. A lot of the young men and women who joined the U.S. military after 9/11 were from this generation. Of course, so were the young men who perpetrated that attack.
Rashida Tlaib is a Leo by Sun sign. Her Sun is conjunct Saturn and in a close square to Uranus. She’s a person pulled between the natural traditionalism of Leo and the rebellious, disruptive influence of Uranus. Leos hold fast to their principles, a tendency that is increased in this chart because of the conjunction of the Sun and Saturn. With the square to Uranus, however, those principles will be her own and may differ sharply from what is expected.
Mercury and Venus are in an almost exact conjunction in this chart and they are trine Neptune. Tlaid is a person who expresses herself well and knows how to frame complex issues in ways that can capture the imagination. However, clarity may at times be lacking. The fact that Mars is square Neptune indicates that Tlaib sometimes takes on fights without a firm knowledge of the ground on which she’s fighting or the strengths of her opponent.
Mars is also a major factor in the partial horoscope of Ayana Pressley. It squares her Sun which, interestingly enough, is in Aquarius, the sign opposite Leo. This is the aspect of a fighter. An Aquarian fighter is a dangerous opponent because Aquarians remain cool and clear-headed even the midst of the most heated conflict.
The most striking thing about Pressley’s partial horoscope is a Grand Trine involving Mercury, Uranus, Saturn and possibly the Moon. Pressley is also pulled between the conservative influence of Saturn and Uranian rebellion. With the Grand Trine, however, she is able to blend those contrary notions into a functioning whole.
Donald Trump and certain Republicans have tried to paint what they call “the Squad” as a bunch of bomb-throwing anarchist. However, these partial horoscope reveal that both Tlaib and Pressley are strongly influence by conservative Saturn. Their liberal ideas (Medicare for all and The Green New Deal) are mixed with a Saturnian respect for established structures. Of course, they are members of congress. Bomb-throwing anarchist don’t generally win elections.
