Oprah’s SpeechOprahImage

Last Saturday night, at the Golden Globes, Oprah Winfrey gave a speech that is still reverberating around the country. It wasn’t just the content of her speech that moved people, it was the way in which it got people thinking of Winfrey as a possible candidate for President. I have to admit that I have deep reservations about electing another television star, even one as intelligent and capable as Oprah Winfrey, to high public office, but I still had to stop and look at her horoscope.

(Click here to see a double chart with Winfrey’s natal chart in the middle and the transits for Jan. 7 on the outside.)

There is still much debate about Oprah’s intentions. She has previous denied having any political ambitions. However, around three weeks ago Saturn crossed her Sagittarian Ascendant. This is an important Saturn Cycle aspect. When Saturn crosses our Ascendant we feel the need to reevaluate how we present ourselves to the world. There are often major changes in our lifestyle or our life goals. So a change from television mogul to politician is not out of the question.

The timing of the speech is also interesting. At the time Winfrey was speaking transiting Mars was conjunct transiting Jupiter. This aspect had people  ready for stirring rhetoric and a call to action. Meanwhile, in Oprah’s chart, this conjunction of Mars and Jupiter was square her natal Mercury. There could not have been a better time for her to make dynamic speech that would capture the imagination of the public. Of course, since the aspect is a square she probably was surprised by the way many people reacted.

Looking at her natal chart in general, there are some indications for success in the political arena. Her Mercury is trine Jupiter. She expresses herself with both authority and benevolence. She’s a big idea person (like most Sun sign Aquarians) and (since Mercury is in her Second House) she can express those ideas in a way in a down-to-earth manner.

She also has an aspect that I’ve written about many times of late. Winfrey’s Mars in Scorpio is square her Pluto. This is the “monster” aspect I’ve written about in the context of several sexual harassment cases. Obviously, Oprah has a done a better job of dealing the lust for power that often comes with this aspect.  In her case, it seems to be more the toughness and resiliency of Mars square Pluto that predominates. This would be something Winfrey would definitely need if she decided to enter politics.

The aspect that concerns me, however, is the close square between Winfrey’s Sun and Venus and Saturn.  There is no doubt that Oprah is a driven person, but what drives her is a deep sense of insecurity. She needs the validation of continual success in order to keep the voice in her head that tells her she’s not good enough (Saturn) at bay. Since Winfrey is also a spiritual person she has no doubt found ways of dealing with Saturn's voice, just as she seems to have tamed Mars square Pluto. Still, even though Saturn square the Sun can be a powerful dynamic for accomplishment, I’m not sure that it could withstand the pressures of the White House.

I’ve looked ahead to Oprah’s transits and secondary progressions for 2020 and I have to say that, if she decided to run, she definitely could win. However, as a citizen I’m still not sure that this would be the best thing for this country, and as an astrologer I’m not sure that it would be the best thing for her.
