The Virgo Saint

Astrologically speaking, there’s not much we can say about the recently canonized Mother Teresa. Not only are lacking a reliable time of birth for her, we are not even such of the day. (Both Aug. 26 and Aug. 27, 1910 have both been given. Click here to see an explanation of the controversy surround her birthday.) The one thing we can be sure of is that she was a Virgo by Sun sign, and in one sense, that is enough.

Virgo is associated with the 6th House, the sector that rules health and service, so it only appropriate that a woman who devoted her life to serving the “poorest of the poor” would be born with this Sun sign. Virgos naturally excel at doing the mundane things that other people might find uninteresting or bland. And yet, for some people those simple, mundane things, like clean water to drink and food to eat are the difference between life and death.

Humility is another quality we often find in Virgo people. They don't require that their efforts be celebrated or praised, and they typically laugh at glamour and the trappings of fame. They live their lives close to the real, close to the most basic of human needs. Where some might wax poetic about the state of a person’s soul, Virgo’s concerns are rooted is simple biology. Sick people need to be treated and hunger people need to be fed.

One the criticisms leveled at Teresa is that the charity associated with her work, which has received millions in donations over the years, lacks transparency with regard to how that money was being spent, but this also a Virgo trait. Virgo focus is always on the immediate, on the job at hand. They are not typically “big picture” people. For Virgo knowing the individual needs of each of the trees is sufficient. Let someone else worry about the forest.

It would be wonderful if we did have a reliable horoscope for Mother Teresa. Being able to see what made this remarkable woman tick would be fascinating. But, for now we’ll have to be satisfied with knowing that she was an excellent example of some of the best qualities of Virgo.
